Pacifica
‘EWA BEACH BRED PACIFICA SHOWS THEIR TRUE COLORS WITH NEW EP

Text: Mililani Lyle

After five years of playing countless local punk shows throughout Hawai‘i, working tirelessly to refine their sound, and making thousands of lattes in order to pay for their move to Orange County, ‘Ewa Beach emo prog-rockers, Pacifica, have finally arrived. They just need a ride from the airport to, well, anywhere.

Upon the release of their new EP, Transient Colors, the young band finds themselves amidst an ocean of cookie-cutter mall punk. While listening to Transient Colors there are familiar melodic elements– a few points of reference that come to mind are Thrice, Circa Survive and Glassjaw. But these Campbell High grads definitely throw in their own spices, drawing inspiration from their local dub and reggae roots. The music is structured, but not in a traditional verse/chorus/hook/bridge type of way. Their arrangements are organized so each piece of the song serves the next.

Pacifica definitely has a bunch of new material in their catalogue and could have released a full-length album, but chose only to record the gems that were ready. The new EP is solid from start to finish. The title track, “Transient Colors,” has a touch of Incubus, Fugazi, and dare I say, a little Pink Floyd. The tones are rich and the blend of sounds are pleasant to the ear.

The Pacifica boys opted to record this album on their own dime, while saving money to make the mainland move. Although they are probably kind enough to just give you a copy, support their cause and buy their album or a shirt! They make awesome Christmas gifts.

Contrast: How did Pacifica get together?

Kika, Singer: “Most of the band actually went to high school together, that’s how most of us met. After high school, as things happen, people work at Starbuck’s and that’s how we met the rest of the band.”

Jay, Guitar: “We had different people at first, it was me, Ricky and some other guys that we were jamming with. But when things started to get serious we changed the lineup a little bit, things weren’t working out with some people. We met Ikaika online through friends and he knew Kika, who was a singer of a band before. Me and Ricky jammed with them and we all got along. We had a different guitarist before and then we met John and brought him into the band. John was one of the guitarists in the previous band. Me and Ricky met through mutual friends at Starbuck’s.”

Is there a certain way you want people to feel in your music?
John, Guitar: “We don’t have a specific sound that we want people to experience or a specific feeling. It’s more we express ourselves, how we feel into the song and when it comes [the audience] takes it in however they feel. Interpret it however you want and how it makes you happy. [Our music] is a lot different from other bands around here because a lot of it sounds repetitive, as far as styles go. A lot of hardcore, California rock. Butt-rock. Hardcore butt-rock. I just want [our music] to be refreshing to hear. It’s really interesting when a person doesn’t understand it at first because you struck a chord in them.”

What was your best experience as a band so far?
Kika: “Our best band experience was when we flew into California and met up with Ikaika at the airport. It was like we arrived as a whole band. It was pretty cool.”

Ikaika, Bass: “Our last show in Hawai‘i was one of the best times ever. All of our friends came out and friends we haven’t seen in forever.”

What’s your favorite Rock Band song to play?
Jay: “Oasis, now that we downloaded it.”

Kika: “But, you gotta sing the remix.”

What’s the best music to hump to?
Ricky, Drummer: “Anything by Sarach McLachlan or Snoop Dogg.”
