LIVING THE DREAM
Brooke Dombroski is one of the busiest working girls around. Technically, her childhood home was the suburban town of Mililani, but actually you could say that she grew up on the beaches of the North Shore. Brooke was always at the beach with her father who’s been a North Shore lifeguard for 34 years now.
Having started surfing in the 7th grade, Brooke would head up north to catch some waves with whatever ride she could get. When she got her own car, the 20-minute drive down the windy road to the Country became routine.
Now Brooke has come of age and has got her own pad on the North Shore. She spends her time wrecking havoc surfing, shooting photos, working for Hurley, and designing for Crush Sunglasses. Her main focus is on Hurley right now for whom she handles retail marketing and event planning. Most young adults like Brooke with visual appeal and a well developed set of skills tend to look to set up residence in the city, but not Brooke. She likes the idea of calling the North Shore home.
Zen: Why did you decide to get a place on the North Shore?
Brooke Dombroski: I just always loved the North Shore, I just came back from school in California a year ago and I’ve been wanting to move here since I was a kid. I just feel lucky that I found a place to live for a really good price. I don’t see the point in driving to the beach. I used to really hate driving to the beach. I guess my interests are different from most girls.
What are the biggest changes you see out here on the North Shore?
Well, my favorite spot is Chuns, and I swear there was never that many people out there before. And in the last few years the traffic near Lanis [Laniakea Beach] has been ridiculous. I go to lay out on the beach by where I live and there’s no room. Before, people [tourists] would look for parking lots but these days people just park on the street and look for walkways to the beaches. I guess they caught on.
So what do you exactly do for Hurley?
I’m in seeing accounts everyday making sure Hurley looks good on display in the stores. Then I plan team signings and parties or benefits. I work with Leilani [Patacchia] and Seth [McKinney] for both Men’s and Women’s events so it’s good. Pretty much, my job is to make sure all the stores are happy with Hurley. It’s a really good job.
What about Crush Sunglasses?
It’s a small company out of California. They make rad glasses for $14 to $28. And I’m in charge of the girl’s art and marketing. I started when I was in California for school. My friend was doing the marketing for them and they needed a girl’s perspective so I’ve been working with them since.
Now what about your photography?
Photography is my passion, I guess it’s my hobby for now but that’s what I want to end up doing. I do mostly portraits. I don’t want to say fashion, but I guess fashion and beauty. I love shooting women and making them look beautiful in their raw form. I want girls to say oh my god I want Brooke to shoot my photo. I want to capture people in their natural element.
You are such a hustler how do you do it?
I just have so many ideas. People say I’m really motivated I guess. Maybe it was going to the mainland and seeing different things. Hawai‘i has so many talented people, they just need to go and live their dreams. Next...
